Equality

EQUALITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

Our approach to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) at The Hazeley Academy is centred around our Academy CORE Values, with a particular focus on RESPECT.

OUR CORE VALUES

Character – We have respect, integrity, loyalty, high expectations and resilience. We believe the differences amongst us make us even stronger.

Confidence – We trust ourselves and each other, we relish taking calculated risks, we understand honest mistakes occur and learn from them together.

Creativity – We enjoy working together designing, creating and reflecting upon solutions, including how to improve ourselves and each other, and in so doing we make our Academy a truly inspiring place.

Community – We use our shared values to understand each other, to do the right thing and enable everyone to feel valued and play their part in growing our vibrant community of exceptional people.

Contributing – We grow through engaging, helping and supporting others; participating in positive causes that make a difference to ourselves and others.

Whilst cognisant of the differences that exist in our wider society, we at the Academy have identified and defined protected characteristics that are consistent with the wider legal framework.

Starting from this foundation, we actively seek to create an environment where students can appreciate their own culture, religion and beliefs and jointly celebrate and promote the diversity that exists within our Academy, whilst constantly being alert to and challenging inequality in whichever form.

We strive to promote and ensure equal opportunities for all our students.

By focusing on the core tenets of respect, we look at instilling in our students, a keen awareness in preparation for their future lives as responsible, positive and confident participants in the broader society.

Our Trust vision is to “grow a vibrant community of exceptional people”. Each of these words is important:

  • Grow - stresses the organic nature of relationships.
  • Vibrant - underlines the fact that we refuse to be normal or dull.
  • Community - focuses on the importance of interconnectivity and our responsibility for the common good.
  • Exceptional - reminds us that we do not all want to be the same and that the differences between us make us stronger.

The Hazeley Academy is not about being normal or perfect; it is about growing through taking part, volunteering and getting to know ourselves and each other.

Our Equality Group is at the heart of what we do - they are made up of a cross-section of students, staff, and governors. They play a key role in making our vision come to life through an evolving range of projects and responsibilities which support the needs of all parts of our community and are aligned to the principles below:

  • Promoting understanding, tolerance and respect;
  • Encouraging that when things go wrong, we respond in a restorative way;
  • Advocating that our community is positive in its communications, while also appreciating that sometimes new levels can only be reached through open, kind debate;
  • Being humble enough to give and receive support, knowing that equality issues constantly evolve;
  • Encouraging people to gain fulfilment by playing a positive role in our community, making it a better place for everyone.

We will never claim to be perfect, but this wonderful group of people work hard to ensure that we keep improving and we are very grateful for their guidance, support, energy, challenge and kindness.

They are a key part of what makes Hazeley so special. You can find details of the 5 Dimensions Trust overall equality objectives here:
